Bio
b. 1982, United Kingdom
I read Computer Science at the University of Sheffield, where I graduated with a first-class B.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence with honours, before pursuing a Ph.D. in Knowledge Management Using Intelligent Web Techniques whilst working as a research associate in the Web Intelligence Group at Sheffield.
I then spent three years working in Paris, France, as technical director of an online media company.
Information is what has driven me through my professional career: in its early stages, the management and access to information, and then to its presentation, and making it usable.
In 2011, I began working in photo-journalism—becoming a primary source of information—whilst covering South Sudan's referendum for independence, and its subsequent split from Khartoum.
Since then, I have covered several conflicts, including Libya, Syria, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic, as well as the drought in the Horn of Africa and several of the continent's elections. I have also worked globally, including in Pakistan and Bolivia.
I was based in Nairobi, Kenya, for five years, and in 2015 I moved to Berlin, Germany.
After 10 years of living overseas, I moved back to the UK, and now live in north Wales, where I hope to photograph issues facing rural communities, and the rifts in society that were bared open following the result of the UK's referendum on membership of the European Union. I will continue to work overseas, as well.
(Prior to 2017, I published under Phil Moore.)
